4.Imbued With the Spirit of Self-Criticism

A horse stumbles that has four legs. The best Guide will make some mistakes in the work no matter how careful he or she is, ad there are so many things to deal with in the trip. Once the Guide has made a mistake, he has to have the spirit of self-criticism, admitting his or her wrong-doing and trying to make up for it. The Guide has to guard against stubbornness and avoid insisting on his or her wrong way of doing things. If the Guide doesn't listen to the advice given by the leadership or colleagues, he or she would commit more serious mistakes nest time. Therefore, the cleverest and most intelligent tour Guide is to learn a lesson from his or her mistak and get his or her work improved nest time.

5.Be Strict in Disciplines of Foreign Affairs

In dealing with foreign affairs and activities, the Guide must observe our Party's foreign policies and other rules and regulations set by the government about foreign currency, tipping and other policies concerned. The Guide must have a strong sense of dignity and never give up principles to curry favour with foreign tourists, though the Guide must be friendly and cooperative with them. Therefore, whether the Guide is strict in disciplines of foreign affairs is a test on the Guide's patriotism, self-respect and national dignity and integrity.

  6.Be Good at Public Relations

Public relations is, in fact, a new branch of academic subject. One can not expect the Guide to be and expert on public relations, but the Guide should be sociable and good at communicating with people from all walks of life so as to get things done more efficiently, as the Guide's profession is to get in direct touch with foreign visitors and the Chinese people working in the line of tourism. Nevertheless, the Guide must remember that in dealing with people, both foreign and Chinese, he or she should be friendly and responsible to earn the reputation of a reliable person. That is the principle of being on good terms with people with different background and from different countries.

  Ⅵ Eight Skills

Apart from the above-mentioned qualifications and requirements for being a top Guide, the Guide, either a national Guide or a local Guide, is encouraged to possess the following eight skills if he or she wants to do an excellent job.

  1.Superior Language Ability

The Guide should try his or her best to improve his or her mastery of the English language, for his or her work is to contact the English-speaking foreign tourists. The Guide should keep up with the development of the English language, especially modern English, including colloquialism. The Guide should be able to understand what a foreign tourist has said and then try to use understandable, if not beautiful English to communicate with them. The Guide should remember to avoid using broken English or fluently wrong sentences to do the interpreting.

  2.Natural Magnetism-Acting Ability

The Guide should try to cultivate his or her acting ability to attract tourists. More often than not, the Guide is found to do an uninteresting interpreting, because he or she has no acting ability which attracts tourists like a magnet. Sometimes, the Guide's English is fluent but his or her interpreting is not satisfactory. That is, most probably, because of lack of acting ability. But, on the other hand, the Guide's English is not very good, but on account of his or her acting ability, he or she can achieve better results in the interpreting.

3.Dynamic Personality—Personable Personality or Out-Going Personality This is also necessary to a top Guide. The Guide with dynamic personality can help break the ice among strangers and help keep the conversation going on. One can not expect a taciturn Guide to be very sociable and talkative. Therefore, a Guide of introverted character is not cut out for the job of a tour Guide. Only the Guide with an out-going personality can deal with foreign tourists friendly and sociably.
